<p><em>The Department of Political Science of Sudhiranjan Lahiri Mahavidyalaya was established in the year 1966. At present the department offers Undergraduate Honours and General courses. The Department has successfully courses in collaboration with the departments of Bengali, English, History, Geography and Defence Studies. The Department actively participates in Youth Parliament, National Voter’s Day observation and frequent participation in subject-related quiz contests etc to keep their interest alive in the subject. Right now the department has two fulltime teachers and two state aided teachers (SACT).</em></p> <p><strong>PROGRAMME OUTCOMES (Pos), PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOMES (PSOs)</strong></p> <p><strong>Name of the Programme: B. A. POLITICAL SCIENCE</strong></p> <p><strong>1.1. Programme Outcomes (POs)The students who complete three years of full-time study of an undergraduate programme of study in Political Science will be awarded a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the desirable learning outcomes which a student should be able to demonstrate on completion of Bachelor’s Degree will include the following:</strong></p> <p><strong>PO1. Develop academic excellence in the subfields of Political theory, Indian Political System, International relations, Comparative political system, Political thought, Foreign Policy and Public Administration.</strong></p> <p><strong>PO2. Become agents for capacity building of the motivated youth of the nation and contributetheir expertise to build a harmonious world order in modern society.</strong></p> <p><strong>PO3. Discuss the major theories and concepts of Political Science and its subfields and also deliver thoughtful and well-prepared presentations of research findings.</strong></p> <p><strong>PO4. The students would be able to explain different approaches to politics an</strong><strong>d </strong><strong>build their own understanding of politics.</strong></p> <p><strong>PO5. Become an agent of change particularly in changing the voting behavior.</strong></p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><strong>PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOMES</strong></p> <p><strong> </strong></p> <p><strong>PSO1<span style="text-decoration: underline;">. </span></strong><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Introduction To Political Theory </span></strong></p> <p>It helps to understand about<strong> </strong>Political theory and the basic concepts.To identify various approaches to the study of Political theory<strong>.</strong></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>PSO2. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Indian Constitution</span></strong></p> <p>Introducing the Indian Constitution with a focus on the role of the Constituent Assembly and examining the essence of the the Preamble. Examining the Fundamental Rights and Duties of Indian citizens with a study of the significance and status of Directive Principles &<strong> </strong>Assessing the nature of Indian Federalism with focus on Union-State Relations. Critically analyzing the important institutions of the Indian Union: the Executive: President; Prime Minister, Council of Ministers; Governor, Chief Minister and Council of Ministers. The legislature: Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha, Speaker, Committee System, State Legislature. The Judiciary: Supreme Court and the High Courts: composition and functions- Judicial Activism looking at the Constitutional Amendment Procedure with focus on the main recommendations of the Constitutional Review Commission (Venkatachalliah Commission and Sarkaria Commission)</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>PSO3. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Politics in India</span></strong></p> <p>The study of Indian Political System conveys the whole body of knowledge to the students about Indian Government and Politics. This encourages the students to think and analyse about the politics of our nation.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>PSO4. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Public Administration</span></strong></p> <p> It helps to understand about Organization, mode, structure of Civil Service and also enables the Students to have knowledge about Budget preparation and</p> <p>Execution.</p> <p>PSO5. Introduction to InternationalRelation It helps to understand about knowledge of various concepts of International Relations for example Collective Security, Balance of Power etc. It also helps to understand various process of International Relation. It studies about UNO which is the only one International Organization functioning for the maintinanence of International Peace and Security.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>PSO6.</strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"> <strong>Comparative Government and Politics</strong></span></p> <p> It helps to understand the comparative analysis of various government or political system of the countries like USA, UK, China, and France. It helps them to</p> <p>critically analyses about the advantages and disadvantages of that political system with Indian political system.</p> <p>PSO7. Contemporary World Politics and issues.</p> <p>It enables the students to understand about the various issues of International Relations like global terrorism, issues between India and different neighboring countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and China. It also gives knowledge about various other aspects like New International /Economic Order and Studies about Global Organizations like WTO,WB. It helps the students to analyze all those issues critically and to understand significance of World Peace.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>PSO8. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Indian Administration</span></strong></p> <p><strong>T</strong>o impart knowledge about the operation of Public Administration in the Indian context and to highlight the important aspects connected with the provision of Public Services in India. Transparency and Accountability, Planning and Administration, Basic Public services, Financial Administration. Identify the importance of Planning. Discuss the role played by Central Vigilance Commission in India. Distinguish between Planning commission and NITI Aayog. Examine the role played by various institutions to combat Corruption.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>PSO9. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC POLICY ANALYSIS</span></strong></p> <p>To equip students to find solutions to practical problems which are brought to the</p> <p>agenda of government, familiarize the actual situations of Public Policy formulation and create awareness about the determines of public policy.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>PSO10.</strong> <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">POLITICAL SOCIOLOGY</span></strong></p> <p>Studying the concepts of Power, Authority and Legitimacy in the context o society.</p> <p>Examining social stratification through the index of class, caste and elite & Evaluating the impact of Religion on society.Relating Gender and Politics Creating awareness among students about Nationalism and State building processes in Western Europe and third world.
