Message from the Head of the Department

Welcome to the Department of Sociology at Sudhiranjan Lahiri Mahavidyalaya.

Our department follows a multi-disciplinary and comparative approach to teaching and learning. One of our key goals is to connect the theories of Sociology with our everyday experiences. As the renowned sociologist C. Wright Mills said in his book Sociological Imagination, we aim to help students understand how personal lives (biography) are linked with larger social forces (history).

We encourage our students to think critically and apply their classroom knowledge to real-life situations. Our curriculum combines concepts from various disciplines—such as political science, economics, psychology, and history—to broaden students’ understanding of society and social behavior. This helps students develop a well-rounded knowledge base that can meet modern job market demands and human resource needs.

We are also planning to introduce student and faculty exchange programs and academic collaborations with other colleges and universities. This will expose our students to new ideas, teaching styles, and research opportunities beyond our campus.

In our classes, we give special attention to the foundational ideas of great sociologists like Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, and Max Weber. Students learn about the shift from traditional to modern societies, the role of class struggles and historical change, and how modern organizations function. Alongside these, we explore contemporary topics such as the “information society,” the relationship between “knowledge and power,” “risk society” (as discussed by Ulrich Beck), and the importance of viewing society from both “macro” (large scale) and “micro” (individual) perspectives.

We believe learning should not be limited to books alone. That’s why we also focus on fieldwork and practical exposure. Students are encouraged to balance both theoretical knowledge (“book view”) and real-world understanding (“field view”)—a vision shared by noted sociologist Prof. M.N. Srinivas.

We also follow the principle shared by Prof. N.K. Bose, who believed that we can understand the complexity of Indian society by simplifying ideas without losing depth. As Prof. André Béteille emphasized, it is important that students use this sociological thinking to serve the larger society, guided by values of equality, liberty, and fraternity.

Our aim is to nurture students who are not only academically sound but also socially responsible human beings. We want them to grow into individuals who can contribute meaningfully to building a better society.

With these thoughts, we warmly welcome you to the Department of Sociology at Sudhiranjan Lahiri Mahavidyalaya. We look forward to being a part of your academic journey.

Thank you,
Dr. Sanjoy Sarkar
Associate Professor & Head of the Department
