DEPARTMENT PROFILE

Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology at Sudhiranjan Lahiri Mahavidyalaya has been offering Sociology as a general subject since 1986. The Honours course was introduced in the academic session 1995–1996.

With the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in July 2023, substantial reforms have been brought to undergraduate (UG) programs, including those in Sociology. NEP 2020 emphasizes credit transfer, continuous evaluation, curriculum flexibility, and interdisciplinary learning. In alignment with these goals, the UG Sociology curriculum has been revised accordingly.

Under NEP 2020, the four-year UG program is structured into eight semesters, each spanning six months. Every semester includes internal assessments along with final examinations conducted by the university. Students are also expected to give presentations based on their coursework and findings from fieldwork. The revised structure enables students to pursue Sociology as a Major or Minor and to take Multi-Disciplinary Courses offered by the department.

The core mission of the Sociology Department is to study human society and social behaviour. This involves an in-depth exploration of social institutions, cultural norms, interpersonal relationships, and their influence on individuals and communities. Through its commitment to teaching, research, and outreach, the department seeks to produce knowledge about social phenomena, address social inequalities, and apply sociological insights to policy-making and social change.

Students receive a Certificate after completing one year of study. Those who complete two years are awarded a Diploma. A Bachelor’s Degree is granted after three years, while students completing the full four-year program receives an Bachelor’s Degree with Honours.

The college library supports the department with a substantial collection of books on Sociology and related fields. The college features modern smart classrooms, an air-conditioned and Wi-Fi-enabled library, and access to the N-LIST online journal database. The library subscribes to prominent journals such as Sociological Bulletin and Economic and Political Weekly, and also offers students exclusive access to the American Library in Kolkata.

Graduates from the Sociology Department have established successful careers in public administration, education, and academic research. Many have cleared competitive exams such as UGC NET and SET, and several are currently pursuing postgraduate and doctoral studies.

Faculty Members of the Department of Sociology

Name

Designation

Specialization

Email ID

Date of Joining

Dr. Sanjoy Sarkar

Associate Professor

Development Studies

sanjoy.sarkar@srlm.ac.in

09.03.2010

Dr. Animesh AL Rai

Assistant Professor

Migration and Social Movements

animesh.rai@srlm.ac.in

13.12.2016
