ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Sociology has been taught at Sudhiranjan Lahiri Mahavidyalaya, Majdia, since the 1980s. The primary purpose of a sociology department is to study human society and social behaviour. This includes examining social institutions, cultural norms, social interactions, and the ways in which these aspects shape individuals and communities. Through research, teaching, and outreach, sociology departments aim to generate knowledge about social phenomena and contribute to a better understanding of social issues and inequalities. They also often seek to apply sociological insights to inform policy-making and promote positive social change.
The college library has adequate number of books on sociology and allied subjects. The college is well equipped with modern day smart classrooms, air conditioned Wi-Fi enabled library, N-LIST (online journal database) and reputed social science journal like Sociological Bulletin, Economic and Political Weekly among others have been subscribed by the college library. The college library also has a special access in the American Library, Kolkata.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 enforced in our institution since 2023 July has introduced reforms, especially for undergraduate (UG) programs including Sociology Courses. NEP 2020 places a strong emphasis on credit transfer, ongoing evaluation, curriculum flexibility, and trans-disciplinary learning. This corresponded a revised curriculum for UG Sociology degrees, which will consist of eight semesters, Students can study both Major and Minor, Multi Discipline Courses in our department. In the NEP 2020, the overall course of four years is divided into eight semesters. Every semester is of six months. In every semester internal tests and final university level examinations are conducted. The students are also expected to make presentations from their course curriculum and field findings.
After completing one year in college, students typically receive a Certificate in their chosen field of study. After completing two years, they receive a Diploma. Upon completing three years, they are awarded a Bachelor's Degree. Finally, after completing four years, they may receive an advanced degree such as a Bachelor's Degree with Honours, depending on the specific program and institution.
Graduates from our Sociology Department have pursued various careers, including government officials, educators, and successful candidates in exams like UGC NET and SET. Many are furthering their education through Master's and higher educational programs.

At present we have two full time substantive teachers in the department namely Dr. Sanjoy Sarkar and Dr. Animesh AL Rai.
