Message from HOD’s Desk:

The Department of Sociology adheres to a multi-disciplinary perspective and employs a comparative approach in its teaching and research. One of our key objectives is to integrate theoretical sociology with the realities of everyday life. As C. Wright Mills aptly suggests in his renowned work The Sociological Imagination, we aim to encourage our students to connect history with biography for a deeper, more holistic understanding of society.

Our department emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary learning, believing that a broad and diverse knowledge base enriches students’ academic growth. Additionally, we focus on helping students develop subjective knowledge that can be applied to real-world situations. This approach is designed to equip students with the skills and insights necessary to meet the evolving demands of the job market and human resource criteria in today’s society.

In line with our vision, we are actively exploring opportunities for student and faculty exchange programs, as well as collaborative academic ventures with other institutions. We believe that such initiatives will enrich the academic experience and broaden the horizons of both students and faculty alike.

We give significant importance to the foundational theories of sociology, drawing on the works of eminent scholars such as Durkheim, Marx, and Weber. Durkheim’s concept of social solidarity, from mechanical to organic, Marx’s dialectical historical approach to societal change, and Weber’s analysis of rationality and bureaucracy, form the core of our curriculum. Additionally, we focus on critical discussions around “macro-micro” sociology, the “knowledge-power” dynamic, the "Information Society," and Ulrich Beck’s concept of the "Risk Society."

At our department, we encourage students to cultivate both “Book View” and “Field View,” ensuring they not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also engage with practical, real-world issues. Guided by the belief imparted to us by Prof. M.N. Srinivas, we aim for our students to graduate with the ability to critically debate and analyze societal phenomena.

Moreover, inspired by Prof. N.K. Bose’s principle of simplifying complex social systems, we strive to help our students understand and interpret the complexities of society with clarity. As remarked by Prof. Andre Beteille, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of these ideas and share them with our wider community, championing modern values such as equality, liberty, and fraternity.

Our core mission is to empower students to become thoughtful, informed individuals who contribute meaningfully to society. We are committed to shaping students with the potential and capabilities to make a positive impact, both as individuals and as contributors to a better society.

With this message, we heartily welcome you all in the Department of Sociology, Sudhiranjan Lahiri Mahavidyalaya.

Thank you,

Dr. Animesh Rai,

Head of the Department,

Department of Sociology,

Sudhiranjan Lahiri Mahavidyalaya.
